Scan. Add. Next item.
The barcodes are already printed on the box. This app gets them onto your Shopify variants: scan an item with any keyboard-mode scanner — or your phone's camera in the Shopify app — and add its barcodes to the variant they belong to. Several barcodes per variant, each with its type. Every change is recorded and can be undone.
If you sell other brands' products, every new style arrives with a barcode already on it. Shopify needs that barcode on the variant before POS can scan it, before Google Shopping accepts it, and before any label app can print it. On a computer, Shopify's bulk editor takes one barcode per variant as you scan down a column — but it doesn't stop a barcode that's already on another variant, and scanning into a cell replaces the barcodes already there. In the Shopify mobile app there's no bulk editor at all.
Barcode generators don't help here: they invent a new code. This app records the ones that already exist — including the case where one item carries several (the retail UPC, the EAN, a carton code) — and keeps them apart by type.
Start here checks your whole store each time you open it (read-only): variants with no barcode or no SKU, barcodes that look mistyped, barcodes on more than one variant, first barcodes that look like carton codes, and barcodes that look like UPC / EAN but are saved as type Custom — with a View link to the variants behind each number. Below it, one line on what each page does.
Pick up an item, scan its barcode (or barcodes — they collect in a box at the top), then double-click the variant it belongs to, or tap Add on your phone. The list is your product list, with the same search and filters as Shopify's Inventory page. Good for receiving day: the box tells you what you're holding, the list tells you where it goes. You can also open it from Shopify's Products page: select products and choose Scan & Add Barcodes from the actions menu, and the list shows just those products.
Work down the list instead: each variant gets one or more empty boxes, the cursor sits on the first one, you scan, it fills, the cursor moves on. Set how many barcodes each variant should get (1–5). Good for a stack of new styles in every size, or a whole collection after an import. With a scanner in hand, print the shortcut barcodes from Settings to skip a variant, skip a product or go back without touching the screen.
UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN-14 and ASIN are recognised from the code itself and written to Shopify with that type; anything else is saved as a custom barcode. Check digits are verified; a code that fails is still saved, flagged, so you can decide.
A barcode that is already on another variant is taken out of the box with a note saying where it lives — including the case where the same code is written as a UPC on one variant and an EAN on another.
Each add is written to Shopify's own barcode fields straight away, behind the scenes — you keep scanning while it saves. If a write doesn't go through, the app says Failed to save.
Move the box to Add later with a note — and, on your phone, up to three photos of the label or the product — and carry on. The Add later page keeps each group with who set it aside and where; Add now brings the codes back into the box when you've found the variant.
Every change the app makes to a variant is one line: the barcodes added or removed, who did it, from which location. Tick any lines and undo them. Kept for 90 days.
In the Shopify mobile app, on a phone or tablet, the same pages get a touch layout — scan with the camera or a paired Bluetooth scanner. At the desk, a USB scanner. Both at once, several people at once: writes to the same product are queued so nobody's scan is lost.
Shipping from outside the EU to customers in the EU? The NS-PID page finds each variant's manufacturer code in your store and adds it as an NS-PID barcode. Missing ones: export a CSV for your supplier and import it back. For products you make yourself, the app can create one.
Any barcode scanner that types into a text box works: USB or Bluetooth, 1D or 2D, from Zebra, Honeywell, Netum, Inateck, Tera, Eyoyo and most others. The scanner behaves like a keyboard — it "types" the barcode and then sends a finishing key. No driver, no pairing with the app.
Open the app's Settings page. The kinds of barcode your products have are already ticked. Click Start check, scan the test code on the screen and click Next — one code at a time. The app compares what your scanner sends with the digits printed under the code: they must be exactly the same. The result is kept on the device you're using, so check once on each device you scan with.
If your scanner reads nothing from the screen, click Print the test codes and scan the paper.
Every scanner manual has a page of "setup barcodes" you scan to change its settings. Find what the check told you:
Also check that the scanner is in keyboard mode — USB keyboard (HID), or Bluetooth HID for a wireless scanner paired to a phone — with the same keyboard language as the phone or computer it's connected to. The app saves codes exactly as scanned; it doesn't add or remove digits.
| Brand | Look for |
|---|---|
| Newland | Prefix/Suffix → Terminator; UPC-A → Transmit System Character; ITF-14 → Enable, Transmit Check Character |
| Zebra / Symbol | Scan Options → Data Suffix; UPC-A Preamble → System Character; Interleaved 2 of 5 → Enable, Transmit Check Digit |
| Honeywell | Suffix → CR; UPC-A → Number System Digit On; Interleaved 2 of 5 → On, Check Digit Transmit |
| Tera / Inateck / NetumScan | Look for "Enter/CR suffix", "UPC-A transmit leading digit" and "ITF / Interleaved 2 of 5 → enable, send check digit" in the setup booklet |
In the Shopify mobile app, the camera button in the app opens Shopify's own scanner. On iPhone, the first time you use it, iOS has to ask for camera permission — if nothing happens, scan once from Shopify's Inventory page (that's where iOS shows the prompt), then come back. If you denied it before: Settings → Shopify → Camera.
2D (imager) scanners read barcodes from phone and monitor screens; older 1D laser scanners usually don't. If you plan to scan supplier PDFs on screen, use a 2D scanner.
$0 / month — all features, no limits
Pricing may change for new installs in the future. Stores that installed before a change keep their plan for as long as the app stays installed.
No card, no trial clock, nothing to cancel.
No. It writes barcodes only. The On hand and Incoming columns are shown for orientation and are read-only.
Into Shopify's own barcode fields on the variant — the same ones you see on the variant page under Barcodes. POS, label printers, Google Shopping and every other app read from there. Shopify is the only place your variants' barcodes are kept.
Labels and Google Shopping use a variant's first barcode; POS finds an item by any of them. By default, new barcodes go after the ones already there — the same as Add barcode on Shopify's variant page. To put a newly added UPC, EAN or ISBN first instead, turn on "Put a newly added UPC, EAN or ISBN first" in Settings. Only a barcode Google Shopping accepts moves first: a 12-digit UPC, a 13-digit EAN or ISBN, or an 8-digit EAN. An 8-digit UPC, a 10-digit ISBN, and store or coupon codes (such as ones starting with 2) stay where they are. Adding a barcode never removes one that's already there.
This app records existing barcodes; it doesn't generate any. For your own products use a barcode generator app, or GS1-registered codes if you sell on Amazon or Walmart.
Open History and Undo, tick the line, undo: the barcodes that line added come off again, and any it removed go back. Everything the app writes is undoable for 90 days.
Yes. Each person's device keeps its own box; writes to the same product are queued on our side so they don't collide. History shows who did what, by the name on each person's Shopify account.
Any scanner that works as a keyboard, or the phone camera in the Shopify app. See Scanner setup.
When you open the page, it reads your whole store again — unless it already did in the last hour and no product has changed since (stock changes count). You'll see "Checking the store…"; until it's done, you see the last check. Check again reads it right away. Opening the page changes nothing: codes are only added when you tick variants and confirm, or start an import.
On the NS-PID page, use Export CSV (choose the current page, all variants, the ones you selected, or everything matching your search). The NS-PID column is filled in where the app already has a code (except codes the app creates). Send the file to your supplier to fill in the rest, then bring it back with Import CSV: you see a summary first, and the codes are added when you click Start import. A code in the file replaces a different NS-PID already on the variant. Every change is in History and can be undone.
The manufacturer part number you may have entered for Google Shopping, in either of two places: the Google: MPN field on each variant, added by the Google & YouTube channel, or the MPN on the product, written by the "Google Shopping / MPN" column of Shopify's product CSV. The app uses the product one only for products with a single variant, because it can't tell which size or color it belongs to. To stop using both, turn off Google MPN in Settings.
In Settings, turn on "Create a code if none is found" and enter a prefix of 2–4 letters, like your brand. Variants where no code is found get one like ABC-HFYVJ39AZ: your prefix, then the variant's ID written shorter. Like any other code, it's only added when you add it on the NS-PID page, and it doesn't change after that. Created codes are left out of Export CSV: the NS-PID column stays empty for your supplier to fill in.
Yes. In Settings, turn on "Add scanned non-standard barcodes as type NS-PID on Scan then Add page or Follow the list to Scan page". While it's on, any barcode you scan or type that isn't a UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN or ASIN is added as an NS-PID, on both scanning pages. The same rules as the NS-PID page apply: a variant that already has an NS-PID keeps it, a code already on another variant is still added (the app tells you), and a variant's own Custom barcode becomes its NS-PID. Turn it off when you scan your own shop codes, or they'll be added as NS-PIDs too.
EU customs accepts that: the same code is then declared as both the NS-PID and the EAN. But Shopify can't store the same code twice on one variant, so the app won't add it. Your EAN stays as it is, and an imported file skips it as "same as its barcode". Some shipping services use the EAN for both when there's no separate NS-PID; ask yours whether it does.
